EXPO 2012
Moroccans are holding their breath while hoping that Tangier will host the EXPO 2012, a few hours before the International Exhibition Office (BIE) votes for a host city for the prestigious event on Monday afternoon in Paris.
The 140 BIE member-countries will vote at the Paris convention centre at 6 p.m. (GMT) to choose between Tangier (Morocco) Yesou (South Korea) and Wroclaw (Poland).
An international support committee, chaired by Federico Mayor (former UNESCO director general), is set up to back the Moroccan candidacy.
The planned total budget for the organisation of the Tangier 2012 International exhibition amounts to 5.3 billion dirhams (nearly 600 million dollars).
Morocco believes that the success of this candidacy is among others « a way of doing justice to Africa. »
The promoters of the Moroccan candidacy for Expo 2012 chose the topic « Roads of the world, meeting of cultures, for a better united world » to express the international dimension of the town of Tangier and to win this « challenge. »
More than 6 million tourists are expected during the three-month exhibition which would open on 16 June 2012, in case Morocco wins.
